An inspiring video featuring nine past and present scholars of Cebu City Mayor Tommy Osmeña went viral, leaving netizens teary-eyed as they scroll their Facebook newsfeed Saturday morning.
“No empty promises, just dreams come true,” reads the caption of the video posted in the official Facebook page of the Cebu City Mayor Tommy Osmeña.
Two minutes and 40 seconds long, the video features four grateful scholars including fresh grad Ferhly Ardimer, who graduated cum laude and who was visited by the city mayor during her graduation rites. The other students in the video are Jessa Ricarte, Jan-Jay Casañal, and Eugene Norbe.
Five former scholars, who are now working professionals, also thanked the mayor and attributed their success to him.
“Because of you, I’m now a civil engineer,” said Frence Galing in the video.
Jic Quebec (Customer Service Specialist), Rolando Magno (Site Engineer), Mishyll Sabellano (Ambulance Crew), and Hycinth Borgonia (Teacher) also shared their inspiring achievement after benefiting from the city’s scholarship program.
24/7 Public Library
Mitch Roldan, the student who suggested to make the Cebu City Public Library available 24/7, is also in the video.
“I really didn’t expect that a simple Facebook comment can do so much. Thank you kaayo, Mayor Tom nga naminaw gyud ka namo,” said Roldan.
Architectural Board Top Notcher Justine Lei Ramos is also in the video saying that the city library helped her a lot in studying for the board exam.
“Thank you so much, Mayor Tommy for prioritizing education. Dako kaayo ka og natabang sa pagtuman sa among mga damgo,” Ramos said.
In the comments section of the video post, Mayor Osmeña clarified that the social media content material is not for campaign purposes.
“The City Scholars Program is not a campaign promise, not a cheap gimmick to earn votes. It’s already there, a dream come true for thousands of young Cebuanos, and a dream that will come true for thousands more,” reads the mayor’s comment along with a #ProgramaDiliPropaganda (hashtag).
Many netizens shared how the video made them inspired and emotional.
Other scholars who didn’t make it to the video opted to share their inspiring stories and appreciation to the city mayor in the comments section.
A City Government scholar receives tuition fee subsidy when he or she enrolls in any university or college in the city that is accredited under the scholarship program.
A City Government scholar is entitled to P10,000 as financial assistance every semester and P1,000 as school supply allowance. Scholars from the mountain barangays are entitled to another P1,000 as a transportation allowance.
Interested applicants must be a graduate of any public secondary school in Cebu City and their parents must be registered voters of the city. Graduates of private secondary schools may avail of the scholarship only if they attended private schools on a scholarship grant.
